• Check your health insurance to see if it covers you while abroad. Most plans do not, or if they do, the coverage is inadequate for a location in Africa.
• Check your credit card coverage too. Some offer limited medical coverage for a fee.
• Medicare usually will not provide coverage outside the USA.
• Get full coverage travel insurance. It is not overly expensive for what it provides. It often will arrange payments directly to medical facilities, saving you out of pocket expense.
