 | Flying to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Dar es Salaam has the closest international airport to Berega. There is a myriad of ways to get to Dar es Salaam. The most economic or efficient way at any given time is best determined by consulting with the various airlines servicing your area. Efficient ways to check flights are through internet searches. Some that are useful are:
Getting a Visa You must obtain a Visa to enter Tanzania. Although it is possible to obtain a visa at the airport in Dar es Salaam, it is highly recommended that one be obtained from a consulate or embassy prior to arrival. Visa requirements can be obtained from the Tanzanian Embassy in Washington, DC. The cost for a visa for a US citizen is $100 (for a 6 month single or a 12 month multiple entry.) Non-US citizen cost is $50.00 for a single entry, $100 for a double entry visa. Express 3 day service can be obtained for an extra payment of $20. There is also a $2 check and credit/debit card processing fee. You will need to provide a prepaid self addressed envelope for return of your passport. If you are planning to do long term work in the nursing, physician or teaching areas you will need a work visa, which Hands4Africa can arrange. Baggage
Check with your airline about baggage allowances. You often need to take supplies for yourself or for the organization with you. Mailing 50 pounds to Tanzania costs $310.40. Last we checked American Airlines allows:
1 - max length + width + height = 45 in carry-on, one personal item (handbag, computer case)
2 - checked bags. Max length + width + height = 62 inches, max weight 50 lbs, up to 70 pounds for a $60 premium. An extra bag is max 62 inches and 50 pounds for $150. Up to 70 pounds for an additional $60.
